Welfare

ORIENTATION

On arrival for a course, each student attends an induction programme and is provided with an information pack about Oxford and Abacus College / Oxford Language Centre. Detailed information is provided on all welfare matters and full assistance is given on registering with a doctor, registering with the police, obtaining a bus pass and opening a bank account. A tour of Oxford is also offered as part of the induction.

All Oxford Language Centre students take an English language assessment test to determine their level before being allocated to a class.

CONSULTATION

The Welfare and Accommodation Officer is always available to help students with any problems and with practical advice. She can offer help with accommodation affairs, medical requirements, financial planning, visa renewals, social and leisure activities and personal problems of any nature.

MEDICAL REGISTRATION

All students will be registered with Abacus College's / Oxford Language Centre's doctor. Free medical consultations are available on the National Health Service for all registered students on courses of six months or longer and medicines are free for students up to the age of 18. Students aged 19 - 21 may also obtain free medicines by applying for a student certificate of exemption from charges. Dental treatment is subsidised for all full-time students and appointments may be made through the Welfare and Accommodation Officer.

Medical insurance is usually only necessary if a student has an ongoing medical condition and may require urgent treatment on a private basis. Oxford has excellent hospitals and as a leading medical centre has expertise in all areas. If a student needs to be admitted to hospital, treatment is free on the National Health Service.

THE MONITORING SYSTEM

Students must attend all classes and must notify Abacus College's / Oxford Language Centre's Secretary if they are to be absent.

The Principal and Director of Studies meet teachers regularly to discuss students' progress and a written report is provided on every student each term.

Oxford Language Centre students must pass a progress test at the end of each language level, before entry to the next level.

Every student has a Personal Tutor as an advisor.

The Principals and Course Coordinator are always willing to discuss individual progress with students and with parents.

ACTIVITIES

Excursions and social activities, such as discos and theatre visits, are organised by the Student Committee and Welfare Officer. The city of Oxford, with its large student population in two universities and several colleges, provides a great range of opportunities for leisure and social activities. The traditional Oxford pastime of punting on the river is very popular in summer, as are swimming and tennis. Ice-skating and badminton are other popular sports, and there are several theatres and many cinemas in the city centre.

STUDY SKILLS

All Abacus College academic courses include a study skills programme. Advice is given on note-taking, essay-writing and on the  organisation of time and work. Students are helped with examination technique and are advised on how to prepare a revision programme.
