The historic colleges of Oxford University are located throughout the city and most are open to visitors. The theatres and cinemas offer a wide range of entertainment and there are many fine sporting facilities, including an ice-rink and three sports centres with swimming pools. There are outstanding restaurants and cafes in the city catering for all tastes and of course many traditional English pubs. There are also many natural pleasures to be enjoyed in Oxford, not least those provided by the city and university parks and river walks.

First mentioned in written history in the year 912, Oxford is known as the City of Spires because of the beautiful skyline of towers and steeples. Oxford University is the oldest in Britain and most of its buildings were constructed in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The earliest of the colleges which make up the university are University College (1249), Balliol (1263) and Merton (1264). Many of the colleges, with their beautiful gardens and grounds, are open to the public in the afternoons and regular tours are available in different languages.

There are many beautiful and historic buildings to be visited around the city of Oxford, including Blenheim Palace, the home of the Duke of Marlborough and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.
